Alex Norton &Â James Willcox
Alex is the owner of Leydene Tree Care, carrying out work ranging from domestic tree surgery to small-scale forestry.Â
​
In 2025, Alex sadly lost his mum, Sue, to ovarian cancer. Sue was incredibly supportive of Alex and his career, and was proud to see him build his own business.
​
Chipping trees to raise money for cancer research feels like a fitting way to honour her memory — combining something he loves with a cause that is now deeply personal to him.
​
For Sue, and for everyone affected by cancer.
James is a partner in a business selling real, locally grown Christmas trees at Forestry England’s Alice Holt.

Outside Christmas, he helps Alex with tree surgery and lends a hand to farming friends with farm work and fencing.

His love of outdoor work comes from his grandfather, Colin, who sadly passed away from skin cancer when James was just three. Often told how similar he is to Colin, James is proud to support cancer research in his memory.

For James, it’s a fitting full-circle journey — bringing families the joy of Christmas trees while helping raise money for a cause that has touched his own family.

Chipping away at cancer together
Chipping Away at Cancer began with two personal stories. Alex’s mum and James’s grandfather both lost their lives to cancer, inspiring us to honour their memories while supporting those affected by the disease today.

We’re two friends who love working outdoors, have the equipment and skills to make a difference, and want to turn our work into something meaningful. With your support, every tree we chip across Hampshire, Surrey and Sussex will help raise money for cancer research.

Our mission is simple: chip as many trees as we can and donate the profits to cancer research.

The woodchip will also be donated to local churchyards for paths and weed suppression, helping us make the most of every tree.
